Hideouts and Secret Places

Hideouts and Secret Places

Last quarter I talked about movies and why writers write. In continuance of that theme, I stumbled across another old movie that brought me to happy tears. It’s titled Angels in the Outfield, the 1951 version starring Janet Leigh, Paul Douglas, and Donna Corcoran.

The movie doesn’t really tie in with this newsletter with the exception of it being from the past, but I wanted to let you know about it. Speaking of time, on November 5th, I will turn 72. Of course, that got me to thinking about the past. I’ve often wondered why certain memories pop into my mind instead of others, but my propensity toward creating hideouts and secret places inspired this edition of the newsletter. In particular, years ago while hiding in such a place, it occurred to me that in the year 2000, I would be 49 years old. At the time, which would have been around 1958, the thought of being that old was difficult to conceptualize. Now, it’s difficult to wrap my head around why a 7-year-old in 1958 would have been thinking about the year 2000.

Then again, I wasn’t your typical kid. But I got pretty good at creating secret places. I once constructed an elaborate two-story hideout out of cinderblocks. My dad had brought home the load of bricks and stacked them in the backyard. I don’t know what he had intended to do with them, but after they had sat there for several days, I rearranged them to better suit my needs.

As time went on, I built treehouses, underground forts, and everything in between, but at some point, I abandoned physical structures and began to find hideouts and secret places in my mind. I began to write fiction.

I know. You thought this newsletter was going somewhere mysterious and philosophical. Maybe next time.

Bob's Third Quarter 2022 Newsletter

Making Sense of Things

I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching lately, drawing closer to God and trying to make sense of things. My son, David, goes skating on Friday and Saturday nights and I usually end up watching television, searching for movies and programs to occupy my time. Unlike the old version of me, I now search for comedy-based content.

Last weekend, I stumbled across two similar but very different movies: It Could Happen to You, with Nicholas Cage and Bridget Fonda; and Peggy Sue Got Married, with Kathleen Turner and Nicholas Cage. Both are well-written and well-acted movies and I mean no reflection—one way or the other—but I found the first one uplifting, but not the second.

It got me to thinking. As writers, we are often asked why we write. We answer in a variety of creative ways, but there is only one true answer. Writers write to understand or make sense of their own lives. The beautiful balance of the equation is that readers read for the same reason. As writers, we pour ourselves and our hearts into the protagonist, or hero, and as readers, we open our hearts to the same thing. That’s why simple three act stories with happy endings are so satisfying. We all want our lives to make sense, have a purpose, and end happily ever after.

Tragedy based stories can convey valuable life lessons, but they are not for me. Most stories end up being a mixture of comedy and tragedy, but in order to be effective they have to lean one way or the other. Stories that try to balance the two, or are intentionally written with an aim to break convention and abandon plot altogether usually fail. If well written, which many are, they might go on to win literary awards but such stories are rarely successful. And by success I don’t mean achieving monetary rewards but truly satisfying the reader’s needs.

It just makes sense.

Bob Avey’s 2nd Quarter 2022

Newsletter

Hello friends and valued readers,

For starters, I have some wonderful news. My granddaughter, Emilia, and her husband Josh are having a baby. It will be my first great grandchild. I know my sweet wife, Kathi, is looking down from Heaven with a smile on her face.

In light of this, the other news pales in comparison, but the re-edited, and rewritten version of, Sandcastle for Pegasus, is now available. The new version is much tighter and carries the reader along more swiftly. To put it more succinctly, I eliminated the extraneous clutter and cut to the chase. If you haven’t downloaded, or ordered a copy of Sandcastle for Pegasus, I ask that you give it a try.

Also, please don’t forget about my latest Detective Elliot novel, Identity Theft:

Please tell your friends about my newsletter.

Bob Avey's1st Quarter 2022 Newsletter

Hello friends and valued readers,

I’m in the process of revising and rewriting, Sandcastle for Pegasus. Hopefully, the revised edition, which is basically the same story with a few revisions, will be released shortly. The new version is much tighter, better written, and carries the reader along more swiftly.

Also, please don’t forget about my latest Detective Elliot novel, Identity Theft:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B081K53NZV/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tkin_p1_i1

I am doing something different with the giveaway this month.  I usually only include readers who recently signed up for the newsletter, but this time I will include all readers. I will give the first three respondents an autographed copy of their choice – Chosen from one of my books of course: Twisted Perception, Beneath a Buried House, Footprints of a Dancer, Identity Theft, or Sandcastle for Pegasus – and all you have to do is send me an email at bob@bobavey.com

Please tell your friends about my newsletter.

I also decided to include—with this issue—a little family update:

My daughter, Karen, and her husband, Dan, started RPI Group, a Real Estate investment company several years ago. Recently, they added RPI Management, expanding their business to include both Investments and Property Management.

My grandson, Nathan, a Captain in the National Guard, is currently helping guard our borders. His wife, Randi, works as an ICU pediatric nurse, and is studying to be a nurse practitioner.

My granddaughter, Emmy, and her husband, Josh are successful software engineers.

I love each of you and pray that God will bring peace and love to you.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your continued support.

Bob's 3rd Quarter Newsletter 2021

Hello friends and valued readers,

My new book, Sandcastle for Pegasus, is scheduled for release August 12, 2021. While the story, a contemporary, urban, fantasy, represents a major change of direction in my writing, I have been told by beta readers that a slight nuance of my mystery background tiptoes through the pages. My granddaughter, Emmy, who edits for me, and reads extensively in the fantasy genre, told me it was the best book I have written, and the most original time travel novel she has ever read. I aspire to retain current readers while expanding my audience. I hope you will give it a try.

There are other ways you can help. Please tell everyone you know, who might be interested, about the book, or ask your favorite bookstore or local library to order it for you. If you write a blog or newsletter, please mention or recommend, Sandcastle for Pegasus.

Hello friends and valued readers,

I continue in my journey of healing. My daughter, Karen, suggested I try some exercise to help with fighting depression, so I recently joined a gym. I pray that it helps. The grief share group I joined through Asbury United Methodist Church has helped.

Newsletter

Hello friends and valued readers,

Though my struggle to regain control of my life continues, I have managed to accomplish some work. My new book, Sandcastle for Pegasus: A Rift in Time, is scheduled for release August 12, 2021. While the story represents a major change of direction in my writing, I have been told by beta readers that a slight nuance of my mystery background tiptoes through the pages. It is not something I set out to do. I aspire to retain current readers while expanding my audience. I hope you will give it a try.

In the meantime, my recently – in my world anyway -- published novel, Identity Theft, suffered a fate of being released during the turmoil of my life in addition to the uncertainty of today’s world. As a result, I have not been able to promote the work and the sales reflect this. Having 4.3 out of 5 stars with 56 reviews, the book should be doing better. Although there appears to be an audio sample available, as far as I can determine, my publisher has not enabled the Read a Sample Feature.

In an admittedly self-promoting spirit to remedy this, I will make an offer: Anyone who purchases a copy of, Identity Theft: A Kenny Elliot Mystery, either paperback or e-book and does not enjoy the book, send me proof of purchase at bob@bobavey.com and I will refund your purchase price.

Welcome new readers. I will give the first three respondents an autographed copy of their choice – Chosen from one of my books of course, Twisted Perception; Beneath a Buried House; Footprints of a Dancer, and now, Identity Theft – and all you have to do is send me an email at bob@bobavey.com

Although I realized that Kathi and I had a good thing going, until my loss occurred, even I had not fathomed the depth of it. The Bible says: Therefore, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Kathi and I had truly achieved this. One of my ministers at Asbury United Methodist Church told me that my pain and tears are an indication of how much I loved her.

I love each of you and pray that God will bring peace and love to this world and His Kingdom.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your continued support.

Bob's 4th Quarter 2020 Newsletter

Hello friends and valued readers

The newsletter list continues to grow. Welcome new readers. In appreciation, I will give the first three respondents an autographed copy of their choice – Chosen from one of my books of course, Twisted Perception, Beneath a Buried House, Footprints of a Dancer, and now Identity Theft – and all you have to do is send me an email at bob@bobavey.com

I continue to muddle along, struggling to regain my footing, and move forward up the steep slope of my valley, so as not to become stagnant, stuck in my grief.

On some level, we all realize our uniqueness. But during periods of great pain, knowledge of our individualism comes into acute focus and evolves into something not tolerable. We all suffer the loss of a loved one in our own way, and during these times we can feel not so much unique as alone, lost in a dark void and reaching out to others for help who have no way of understanding what we are going through, much less what to do about it.

I realize many people are experiencing grief and anxiety over the problems we all face in our currently troubled world, and I apologize for using what was once a humorous and uplifting newsletter as a soapbox for additional sadness. However, I must admit somewhat guiltily that the overpowering depression I am caught up in has nearly eclipsed all else.

However, in times like these, in which we feel overwhelmingly alone, there is someone we can turn to; our Father in Heaven, and Jesus Christ, His only Son, and our Lord and Savior.

Please pray for me and my family.

I love each of you and pray that God will bring peace and love to this world and His Kingdom.

From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your continued support.

Bob Avey's 3rd Quarter Blog 2020

Hello friends and valued readers
The newsletter list continues to grow. Welcome new readers. In appreciation, I will give the first three respondents an autographed copy of their choice – Chosen from one of my books of course, Twisted Perception, Beneath a Buried House, Footprints of a Dancer, and now Identity Theft – and all you have to do is send me an email at bob@bobavey.com
Time marches on.

We had my sweet Kathi’s memorial service June 20, which I had to arrange and plan, choosing a date, picking out photographs for a video, and deciding on music. The process made worse an already grieving situation.

I am trying to get my writing going again. Unfortunately, a byproduct of depression is a foggy mind, which hinders the process of thinking. I find even mundane chores, such as reconciling a checkbook, difficult and compared to writing a novel a checkbook is falling-off-a-log. My publisher wants another Elliot novel and I’m having trouble with this newsletter. Once again, there is no comparison. I also have a time travel novel I was working on. I’m not a fast writer, but this book was flowing out of me like a wellspring, and then my world fell apart and my mind began to literally shut down. Sadly enough, my publisher is interested in this book as well. When I first pitched it, they were not interested, but, before the crash, I sent it to them anyway, ninety percent finished and completely unedited. Now they want the time travel book. All I have to do is finish it. That sounds easy enough, but it is not. It’s an extremely complex and complicated novel. Every time I pull it from the drawer, I feel like a three-year old trying to comprehend the works of Einstein.

I have explained the problem to my publisher and they have been extremely patient and understanding. I don’t know how long this will last. My marketing efforts for Identity Theft – a rather prophetic title looking back – have been nonexistent, and though the book started off with a bang it is now not selling well.

Please pray for me and my family.

I love each of you and pray that God will bring peace and love to this world and His Kingdom.
From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your continued support.
