Bob Avey's 4th Quarter 2023 Newsletter

Hello everyone. Once again, not much news to report. My son, David, and I celebrated Thanksgiving with my daughter, Karen, my son-in-law, Dan, and his family. We all had a good time.

As you get ready for Christmas consider reading John 3:16. For God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. As readers and writers, as you read this, consider the word whoever. It is the greatest gift ever given.

Sandcastle seems to be picking up steam, garnering 4.7 out of 5 stars on Amazon. However, there are not many reviews compared to my other books. I think readers are unsure about my sudden genre change. But those who have read Sandcastle, love it. If you haven’t downloaded, or ordered a copy of Sandcastle for Pegasus, I ask that you give it a try.

Books make good Christmas gifts. You still have time.

Bob's 3rd Quarter 2023 Newsletter

I don’t have much news to report this quarter. Based on my going-forward decision explained in the last newsletter, I joined a discipleship community at church, Asbury Church of Tulsa. My goal is to become more involved with church and make new friends along the way.

At Asbury, we are currently studying The Gospel of Matthew and last night, Wednesday September 13, we had a church-wide Bible study. It turned out to be both informative and inspiring. Pastor Andrew Forrest stated that the Gospel of Matthew is a roadmap of discipleship for those wishing to follow Jesus.

My great granddaughter, Violet, celebrated her first birthday September 7, 2023. David and I drove down to McKinney Texas to share in the celebration. Little Violet is adorable.

Bob's 2nd Quarter 2023 Newsletter

Bob Avey’s 2nd Quarter 2023

Newsletter

On June 20, 2023, I managed to gather my senses and deliver a presentation to the Tulsa NightWriters, a writing club that I have been a member of for thirty-three years. As I explained how using our own life experiences can enhance the writing of a story or novel by focusing the elements of fiction through a thematic adhesive, it occurred to me that I truly had been following my own advice all along. When viewed through such a lens, the titles of my novels seem almost prophetic but are probably more correctly just indicative of the moods and phases of life I was going through.

Life is a journey and I believe that God uses this life and its experiences to make us ready for the next life. Through our joining the Church and drawing closer to God, Kathi and I were drawing closer to each other. Our love had begun to blossom into the flower that it was during the later phases of our marriage and could have been for the entire fifty years.

When I think of Kathi, I am reminded of a song, Vincent (Starry Starry Night), by Don McLean. In the song, Mr. McLean so beautifully states, speaking of Vincent Van Gogh, that “I could have told you Vincent, that this life was never meant for anyone as beautiful as you.”

But I honorably disagree with Mr. McLean, whom I believe to be an excellent artist.  I, and speaking of my sweet Kathi, have to say that this life was meant exactly for someone as beautiful as you. Kathi was an example for the rest of us of what unconditional love looks like. I am blessed to have been allowed to share fifty years of my life with such a wonderful person.

God has a purpose for everyone and it is time for me to try and move forward and seek to find and fulfill God’s purpose for the remainder of my life.  I am struggling with this. I ask for your prayers and I offer you mine.

If you haven’t downloaded, or ordered a copy of Sandcastle for Pegasus, I ask that you give it a try.

Bob's 1st Quarter 2023 Newsletter

I was recently inducted into the Tulsa NightWriters—a Tulsa based writing club that I’ve been a member of since 1990— Hall of Fame, even managing to muster up the courage to attend the meeting on February 21 to receive the beautiful wooden plaque presented to me. I sincerely thank the club for this honor.

Even before this, I was approached by the club to give a presentation—not related to the induction— and, during a strong moment, I agreed to a speaking engagement for the June 2023 meeting. Now I’m terrified because I’m not sure if I can live up to the expectations of the club and pull it off. I haven’t had a public speaking engagement in about six or seven years. I’ve lived a lot of life since then. I imagine it is a bit like learning how to walk again after a severe injury. For me, dealing with the past few years, after my sweet wife Kathi went to be with the Lord, has been similar to coping with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. I was blessed, beyond my ability to convey the feeling, by having spent fifty years with such a wonderful person. I have been stumbling around, trying to find my way since she went home. My faith in God, and knowing that my family needs me, has kept me going.

The updated version of Sandcastle for Pegasus, is now available. If you haven’t downloaded, or ordered a copy of Sandcastle for Pegasus, I ask that you give it a try.

Hideouts and Secret Places

Hideouts and Secret Places

Last quarter I talked about movies and why writers write. In continuance of that theme, I stumbled across another old movie that brought me to happy tears. It’s titled Angels in the Outfield, the 1951 version starring Janet Leigh, Paul Douglas, and Donna Corcoran.

The movie doesn’t really tie in with this newsletter with the exception of it being from the past, but I wanted to let you know about it. Speaking of time, on November 5th, I will turn 72. Of course, that got me to thinking about the past. I’ve often wondered why certain memories pop into my mind instead of others, but my propensity toward creating hideouts and secret places inspired this edition of the newsletter. In particular, years ago while hiding in such a place, it occurred to me that in the year 2000, I would be 49 years old. At the time, which would have been around 1958, the thought of being that old was difficult to conceptualize. Now, it’s difficult to wrap my head around why a 7-year-old in 1958 would have been thinking about the year 2000.

Then again, I wasn’t your typical kid. But I got pretty good at creating secret places. I once constructed an elaborate two-story hideout out of cinderblocks. My dad had brought home the load of bricks and stacked them in the backyard. I don’t know what he had intended to do with them, but after they had sat there for several days, I rearranged them to better suit my needs.

As time went on, I built treehouses, underground forts, and everything in between, but at some point, I abandoned physical structures and began to find hideouts and secret places in my mind. I began to write fiction.

I know. You thought this newsletter was going somewhere mysterious and philosophical. Maybe next time.

Bob's Third Quarter 2022 Newsletter

Making Sense of Things

I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching lately, drawing closer to God and trying to make sense of things. My son, David, goes skating on Friday and Saturday nights and I usually end up watching television, searching for movies and programs to occupy my time. Unlike the old version of me, I now search for comedy-based content.

Last weekend, I stumbled across two similar but very different movies: It Could Happen to You, with Nicholas Cage and Bridget Fonda; and Peggy Sue Got Married, with Kathleen Turner and Nicholas Cage. Both are well-written and well-acted movies and I mean no reflection—one way or the other—but I found the first one uplifting, but not the second.

It got me to thinking. As writers, we are often asked why we write. We answer in a variety of creative ways, but there is only one true answer. Writers write to understand or make sense of their own lives. The beautiful balance of the equation is that readers read for the same reason. As writers, we pour ourselves and our hearts into the protagonist, or hero, and as readers, we open our hearts to the same thing. That’s why simple three act stories with happy endings are so satisfying. We all want our lives to make sense, have a purpose, and end happily ever after.

Tragedy based stories can convey valuable life lessons, but they are not for me. Most stories end up being a mixture of comedy and tragedy, but in order to be effective they have to lean one way or the other. Stories that try to balance the two, or are intentionally written with an aim to break convention and abandon plot altogether usually fail. If well written, which many are, they might go on to win literary awards but such stories are rarely successful. And by success I don’t mean achieving monetary rewards but truly satisfying the reader’s needs.

It just makes sense.

Bob Avey’s 2nd Quarter 2022

Newsletter

Hello friends and valued readers,

For starters, I have some wonderful news. My granddaughter, Emilia, and her husband Josh are having a baby. It will be my first great grandchild. I know my sweet wife, Kathi, is looking down from Heaven with a smile on her face.

In light of this, the other news pales in comparison, but the re-edited, and rewritten version of, Sandcastle for Pegasus, is now available. The new version is much tighter and carries the reader along more swiftly. To put it more succinctly, I eliminated the extraneous clutter and cut to the chase. If you haven’t downloaded, or ordered a copy of Sandcastle for Pegasus, I ask that you give it a try.

Also, please don’t forget about my latest Detective Elliot novel, Identity Theft:
